Cancer Awareness Ribbon Blanket

A few years ago, I taught a friend of mine how to crochet, and then not long after I taught her how to make a corner to corner blanket. While it was a little disorienting at first, she caught on quickly and found that she loved it.

Several years ago, her mom was diagnosed with cancer and began fighting for her life.  In July of last year, they found the cancer had spread.  To encourage and surprise her mom, my friend decided to make her a blanket with the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon on it.

My friend found a pattern that might have worked, but it would have taken a very long time to finish it.  All the wheels in my head immediately started spinning. There may have been smoke, at a minimum I’m sure you could  hear the whirring.  I knew I could design one for her in corner to corner and I was off to the drawing board.  After a couple of modifications to the pattern, I tested it myself but wasn’t 100% satisfied with it.  A few adjustments later, and finally, we had a pattern for a Cancer Awareness Ribbon Blanket.

In October they found out the cancer had spread further. Her mom mentioned something about wanting a blanket to keep her warm during her chemo treatments.  Little did she know, that coziness was already in the works.

Pictured are the two blankets we have made.  The pink Cancer Awareness Ribbon Blanket is my friend’s blanket she made for her mom.   The navy-blue ribbon blanket is my testing blanket. I made with the intention of giving it to my cousin who was battling a very aggressive colon cancer.  Since I wasn’t happy with how it came out (perfectionism at its worst) I almost didn’t give it to her.  After much encouragement from my friends and family, and getting my pride out of the way, I finally gave it to her.  I’m so glad I did, she loved it and I hope she found comfort beneath it.

Pink, for Breast Cancer Awareness
Navy, for Colon Cancer Awareness

Unfortunately, the cancer was so aggressive, it took my friend’s mom, too soon.  She was able to share the blanket with her just before she passed in December.  Sadly,  only a few short months later and my cousin has lost her battle with cancer as well.

Cancer is nasty!

A few years ago, my mother-in-law fought a rare cancer, she fought hard up until the moment she quietly left this earth. I didn’t have the blanket to give her then, but I hope she knows how amazing I think she was for how bravely she fought. I’ll always remember how she expected to leave the hospital.  She had plans to take a family vacation to the beach, where she could put her toes in the sand and drink Mint Juleps.

In memory of each of these special ladies and to honor their courageous fight, I will always donate a portion of the proceeds of the Cancer Awareness Ribbon Blanket PDF pattern sales to the American Cancer Society  In celebration of the release of this special pattern, for the remainder of March 2019, sign up for my newsletter by clicking here and I  will send you a code to download it for free.  I may offer it free in the future in honor of their birthdays, as well.  Included in the pattern are a graph, row by row instructions, basic instructions of how to begin a corner to corner blanket, and a few pictures for visual instruction.

Cancer is vicious and seems to be rampant. Though we may feel helpless, I believe we can still help. Whether we support our friends and loved ones with encouragement, being their driver, simply providing a meal, or making a warm cozy blanket, let’s all do what we can!
