How to Crochet a Granny Square

Happy Granny Square Day!

In honor of this fun day I would like to share a few of my granny squares with you and teach you how to crochet a granny square.  Hopefully you’ll be inspired to make one or more of your own!

Granny squares make the best blankets, they’re so versatile and easy to make. You can make them striped, solid, or multicolored and you can use almost any yarn or fiber!  They are also the best project when you just need to crochet and relax, it does wonder for the body and mind!

How to crochet a granny square:

Select your yarn and appropriately sized hook for your yarn and tension.

There are two different ways to start, either with a magic ring or with a chain ring. I prefer the magic ring because I have more control over the size of the hole at the center.

Once you have your ring make a chain 3 (this counts as a double crochet) then into the ring you will crochet the following, 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets, and a chain 2. Slip stich to the top of the initial chain 3. You should have 12 double crochets and 4 chain 2 spaces.

For the next round you will slip stitch over and in to the next chain 2 space, chain 3, 2 double crochets, chain 2 and 2 double crochets all into the same space, chain 1.

You just created your first corner.

For the remaining 3 corners you will place 3 double crochets, a chain 2, 3 double crochets, and a chain 1 in rest of the chain 2 spaces. Slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3. You should have 24 double crochets, 4 chain 2 spaces, and 4 chain 1 spaces.

For the third round, slip stitch over to the next chain 2 space, repeat the, 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, chain 1, sequence from the previous round for the chain 2 space corners.  In between the corners, in each of the chain 1 spaces you’ll crochet only 3 double crochet and a chain 1.  When you get all the way around, slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3.

You’ll repeat the last round until your square measures the size you’d like it to be.

Here are just a few blanket sizes for reference:   Lovey  10” x 10”,  Receiving blanket 40” x 40”,  Swaddler 47” x 47”, Small square throw 52” x 52”.

If you want to change colors, bind off after you slip stitch, then begin your new color by with a slip stich and chain 3 into any corner space.
