Color Block Baby Blanket

I love baby blankets; they’re one of my favorite things to crochet.

When my kids were little, they loved blankets, all blankets.  Even today as older teenagers there are still blankets that go with us on trips, and I love it!  My favorite gifts from their showers were the handmade and special blankets they received and yes, we still have them today.

So, my thought is that if we loved them and I love making them then the receiver will hopefully love them just as much, right? I could be wishfully thinking, but that’s ok, I don’t mind imagining it. One of the many ways I spread sunshine through the art of crochet.

Perhaps the part that is most fun is finding or designing just the right blanket for the baby who will be wrapped in it.  Kind of like my own personal hug.  I’ve recently finished up two such blankets, another one is on my hook as I write this, and yet another is working its way out of my brain.  So much fun!!!

The blanket pictured is the most recently finished one, it’s the Color Block Baby Blanket.  It’s worked up fairly quickly since the yarn is so thick and squishy.  I love the contrast of the white with the boldness of the blue and green. It’s perfect for the baby boy who will receive it.  I can see him having lots of tummy time on all that thick and squishy!  On purpose, the blocks of color are not equal in size, I think it adds a bit of character.

Here’s how you can work one up, too.

You’ll need 1 big skein of each of the Bernat Blanket yarn in Go Go Green and Blue, and a big and small skein in White. For the hook, I went with the largest I had on hand at the time, an N/P (10mm).  *There’s a list at the bottom of this post that includes affiliate links. When you purchase your supplies from these links you help support Crochet Sunnshyne in a small way, at no additional cost to you. You can also find a list of my favorite tools, here.

Start by chaining 64 in either blue or the green, then half double crochet in the third chain from the hook and all the way across. Chain two, turn and repeat until your work measures the length of each block of color
accordingly:

Blue = 14 ½”, Green = 10 ½”, White = 17 ½”

Of course, you can use your choice of colors, just match them up using the same measurements.

My finished blanket measures 41 inches by 32 ½ inches. In the same way you can choose your colors you can also choose to make this larger or smaller. It’s a versatile pattern.

Enjoy and crochet a little sunnshyne today!
